You Don't Own Me

Here is my new single 'You Don't Own Me', featuring Hakeem Johnson. We began shooting our music video in June 2020- the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are sorry that we couldn't show you this sooner, but we truly believe that it has been worth the wait. Hakeem and I want to give a massive thank you to the film crew, the producers, the costume designers and the many, many more people who got involved with the shoot during these uncertain times, and even though we hit many obstacles along the way, we wouldn't have been able to do this without any of you.

In recognition of the issues that we worked with and represented in our song, all profits made from our music will be going towards Women's Aid, who work with women and infant survivors of domestic abuse across the UK, and spread awareness of how to identify and help someone who you believe may be vulnerable at home. The video below tells heart-breaking the story of survivors Dawn, Mandy and Sharon, all of which Hakeem and I were lucky enough to meet via Zoom during the production of our music video. We wanted to hear from those who had experienced domestic abuse to help us with the challenging issue, which educated the both of us in how severe and scary domestic abuse can be, especially during the pandemic. Bringing these issues so close to home made it hard to keep going, but we knew that we needed to do all we could to help women and young people speak out in dark times, and this is what kept us going.

As well as the support for Women's Aid, we wanted to show our appreciation to all of the doctors, nurses, health care and key workers who are doing an incredible job at helping the nation to keep on going, even through the darkest moments. Hakeem and I have decided to set up a donation page to support the NHS, and we kindly ask that you help us to achieve the goal of raising £100,000 to go towards hospital resources which will help to keep the virus under control as much as we can. The link to our page can be found below, as well as in mine and Hakeem's instagram and twitter Bio's.

And finally, we thank you for all of your patience and support during the creation of this song. For all of our fans, we wish you all the best for the year ahead, and we hope that our video brings the awareness people need towards domestic abuse. If you believe that you may be vulnerable, or just need to talk to someone, there is help available for you. You do not have to suffer in silence!

All of our love and care during these challenging times,

DISSENT and Hakeem x
